Churchwood Valley Holiday Cabins

Churchwood Lodge (1 Double, 1 Twin & Sofa Bed)

Lodge
2 Bedrooms
Sleeps 6
Max 2 pets

Churchwood Valley is a beautiful, natural wooded valley running down to the sea at Wembury Bay in South Devon, near Plymouth. Look closely and, hidden among the lush green foliage, you’ll see wooden cabins nestling on the hillside.

Each holiday cabin has its own plot on the hillside, surrounded by trees, flowering shrubs, hedges and rustic fences. All our cabins have views across the valley, with some looking out over the water meadow or towards the sea.

There’s a car parking space near each cabin and private roads and paths give access to the beach, an unspoiled stretch of rock pools and shingle with sand at low tide. Adjoining National Trust land, the beach is no more than a 10-minute stroll away from any of the cabins.

Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome in each cabin for a small charge, there are dog exercise areas on site and plenty of space for canine roaming locally.

This modern style of lodge has light and spacious interiors and provides a high level of creature comforts, such as dishwashers, washing machines and a TV with DVD player. The Churchwood Lodge can sleep up to six and has one double room, one twin room and a double bed settee in the lounge. Bath or shower. Sliding patio doors enhance the views of the valley over the decking patio.

A haven of peace within an environmental paradise, Churchwood Valley is a few minutes’ walk from a safe family beach and the South West Coast Path.

If ‘getting away from it all’ is the most important part of your holiday – Churchwood Valley is for you. Each holiday cabin is nestled within the woodland. By moving no further than your armchair, you’ll see delightful displays of birdlife, and a trip to your private patio may well afford a glimpse of badgers, foxes, squirrels, and other wildlife.

There are no discos, bars, or cafes – just rock pools, wildlife, and breathtaking scenery. Secluded it may be, isolated it is not. Churchwood’s licensed shop sells a wide range of food and drink, beach toys, gifts, and many other products, so you don’t even need to leave the site for those ‘essential’ items. We also have a fully equipped launderette. If you feel the need for a more extensive shop, or have a taste for the bright lights, the city of Plymouth is just a 20 minute drive away.

Really enjoyed our little holiday at churchwood valley. Beautiful area, the beach just a short walk. Staff that we encountered were lovely. We didn't want to leave! Accommodation was very suitable with three young kids. They enjoyed the local wildlife that paid us a visit, was absolutely wonderful. Will come again soon

DL6, chalet number 7. Church Walk. Delighted with the position, wonderful vista (and beautifully clean, massive windows to enjoy it!). Utterly peaceful. Despite being a busy site, noise doesn't carry. The cabins so well-landscaped that every one feels private & close to nature and the beach.Re-visiting after many years, we worried that the site may have modernised too much. But yay! Still charming, like stepping back into the 1950's!Suggestion: Simple white or single colour modern bedlinen, white plates, dishes, bowls (including pasta bowls!) and 6 white mugs. At least 1 good sharp knife for chopping (kept in the office until requested?).It's not really a cheap stay (yes, I know we pay for the location). But small inexpensive changes could create a premium feel in a simple space. No actual complaints tho. Will be back... Such a fabulous place !!

Enjoyed the week but could be improved quite easily

The table and furniture were rather sticky due to whatever they've treated it with which was quite annoying. We tried to do a puzzle but it all stuck on. The seal on the shower is gone, the vacuum was quite awful so the rug ended up being filthy and covered in the previous occupant's dog hairs. The location was good, very convenient and the staff were very helpful. The kids loved sitting outside with the birds visiting and we had a nice barbecue.

Peaceful

Churchwood is a great site for a peaceful break surrounded by nature. The cabins are clean bright and airy and you have a private outside space to enjoy. The whole site is pet and children friendly, and that leads to my only complaint. The outside space was fully enclosed apart from the opening to the steps out to the rest of the site, this was just an opening leading to a long set of steps. We had no way to close it off so had to keep the dog tethered at all times (happy to keep him on a leash while walking the site, but having to do it every time the door was left open was tiresome), if we had stayed with very young children this would also have been a serious concern.

Response from the owner

28 July 2025

Thank you for leaving us a 4* review in respect of your recent stay. We are glad that, overall, you enjoyed your holiday, but we wanted to address your comment regarding the outside space. Very few of our cabins have patio and decking which is secure, if there were tall fences and barriers throughout the site it would detract from the natural feel which is one of our features. Having said that, if you had let us know while you were here that you had an issue, we could perhaps have made the space a little more secure for your dogs. We hope that you will return and please highlight this request when you book-if we can accommodate it in any way then we will. Thank you for taking the trouble to leave us your feedback.

Living in the woods

Lovely cabin in a peaceful location it really is like living in the woods. We enjoyed many walks in the local area with the dog's taking in the local sights. Jennycliff cafe is a must for a hot drink and cake overlooking Plymouth sound. Dartmoor for lovely walks or catching the ferry over to Cornwall. We will definitely be back

We visited churchwood thirteen years ago with our small grandchildren and it was a lovely place to be this time we returned as four adults and it was the most relaxing holiday we’ve had the lodge was clean and supplied with everything we needed the site is clean and tidy the shop is supplied with all essentials the owners are friendly and welcoming. The walk to the local pub the odd wheel is an up hill trek but the meals are well worth it ,the cafe on the beach is a clean friendly place for light lunches or cream teas.Dartmoor prison museum is worth a visit and the clapper bridge.St William yard in Plymouth is a lovely place to eat .its a lovely place just to chill out and relax and at a reasonable price

The cabin we had was excellent, the shop had a good selection of essentials and was reasonably priced. Location was excellent for us as we had friends in Wembury. Only thing that would improve the site would be some ev charging.

The setting, peace and quiet keeps us coming back

Fowler, Hugh - 03/07/2024

For a getaway from it all holiday you can't beat Churchwood Valley. The setting is lovely and there is peace and quiet yet it is only a leisurely stroll away from the sea, where the National Trust owned piece of coast includes a marine visitor centre offering guided rockpool rambles, the charming Old Mill cafe and a choice of moderate walks along the coastal path if you want to be more energetic. Not to mention the surfing and bodyboarding when the conditions are right. All this and only 30 mins from Plymouth with all it has to offer and an hour from Dartmoor.
