Our Home and site dates back to the 15th Century where once was a Peel Tower-Fortified watchtower, in the garden area @ the front of the house.
The Original Rectory sat lower down in the garden and was built in 1859-60 it was severely damaged by fire in 1913 and demolished in 1921. The old well which served this building is still used in the garden today.
The current building used recycled materials from the 1860 rectory.
Our Pods opened in 2014 on what was the paddock for the Old Rectory, this was also known locally as 'The Pickhill' and people of the village can remember the carnival ending in this field in years gone by.
The design of the Pods are all very well insulated with a wraparound wooden cladding and electric heating. There is a good head height and plenty of light through the glazed French doors that open onto a decking area with table and chairs. Kitchenette with fridge/Microwave/Electric-hob, table and chairs, TV/WIFI / double bed and a pull-out sofa bed (double). All Pods have Ensuite shower and toilet. Bedding, Crockery and utensils, Fire pit (including one bag of logs) and a welcome pack. Dogs very welcome max 2 per pod additional charge.
Things to do and see - Apart from the Hadrian's Wall
The village lies within the Solway Coast Area of Natural Beauty, popular with visitors for Bird Watching and boasts 10 Nature reserves all within easy access from our site.
Cycling - we are on the National Cycleway Route 72 - Hadrian's Cycleway. You will find cycling is on a low level type of terrain and in most parts see very little vehicle traffic!. One our favourite routes from our place is the Cardurnock Peninsula, a 16-mile circular past beaches and saltmarshes.
Carlisle lies 30 minute drive and has numerous places to visit from Carlisle Castle and close by the Cathedral and shopping centre.
The Northern Lakes is a 40 minute drive including Keswick,Portinscale,Cockermouth and Grasmere plenty of Wainwright Walks on the doorstep.
Eating out we can recommend/book Local Pubs like our Local village pub 'the kings arms' which we reckon is '200' steps! away and other Restaurants further a field in the area.
The scenic views across the Firth to Scotland are just stunning as many photographers and Artists have documented, whilst it looks close a drive of 45 mins will see you in Gretna.
