Rutland

If you’re looking for somewhere unusual for your next glamping holiday, how about glamping in Rutland? Most people have never heard of this pint-sized county and certainly cannot easily locate it on a map, which makes family glamping breaks in Rutland all the more exciting!

Rutland glamping holidays put you in the heart of the East Midlands, between Leicester and Peterborough. The county has just two towns, Oakham and Uppingham, but they are both worth visiting for their open-air markets. Oakham Castle has a fine collection of over 200 horseshoes donated (or forfeited!) by visiting royals. Uppingham’s claim to fame is the remains of a motte and bailey castle at Castle Hill and the Eyebrook Reservoir, which was used for rehearsals by Avro Lancasters before the Dambuster mission in 1943.

There are plenty more historic attractions to visit when glamping in Rutland including Rutland County Museum and the Elizabethan Kirby Hall with its formal gardens. Family glamping in Rutland should definitely include a trip to Bugtopia Zoo and a day at the Rutland Farm Park, both in Oakham. A ride on the heritage railway at Rocks by Rail Living Ironstone Museum is unforgettable!

Rutland’s main feature is Rutland Water, one of the largest manmade lakes in Europe. Walkers and cyclists can enjoy pleasant scenery as they circumnavigate the lake on the 23mile perimeter trail. An easier way to enjoy the view is on a cruise aboard the Rutland Belle. The shallow waters and banks are a wetland nature reserve which attracts a host of migrating birds and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The lake is also a haven for sailing, fishing and watersports enthusiasts enjoying a relaxing glamping break in Rutland.

Jutting out into the reservoir, the Hambleton Peninsula was created when the valley was flooded. The surviving village includes a 12th century church with wonderful stained glass, a pub, Priests’ House and a Jacobean Old Hall, now a Michelin star restaurant. It’s a wonderful place to celebrate with a special meal while glamping in Rutland.
